The Great Mound at Knowth |
IRUSAN:
King o' the Cats and Lord of Felines in various folk legends.
|
According to an old Irish legend, Irusan
was a huge cat, the size of a cow no less! He lived a regal life of royal
splendour in a cave at Knowth
near the village of Donore,
Co. Meath, Ireland. Learning
that a poet had made satirical remarks about him, the large feline carried
the offensive poet off and was killed by a saint who drove a red-hot iron
though his body.
There is a reference to the 'King of Cats'
in an old Irish folk-tale: " A man killed a cat, but just before it died
the cat told him to say that he had just killed the King of Cats...When
the man got home and his own cat heard the news, it leapt up from its
fireside resting place and tore him to shreds!
